Organizer/ therapist
Recently, clients have given me all kinds of feedback that shows that something’s working.
“You have such a calming energy.”
“You’re a breath of fresh air.”
“You’re like a therapist!”
The last one was the same client who told me I was making her dreams come true this past winter, bringing her Pinterest boards to life with organized closets in her dreamy log cabin on the lake. She reached out again recently for help organizing her basement. Making sense of all the items that had ended up there was a cluster: inherited items, holiday decor, sports gear, gardening tools, old exercise equipment, paint, tools, etc.
I’m sure you can relate. What kinds of things have ended up in your basement?
Commonly, we put anything there we don’t use regularly or don’t know what to do with yet. Just the other morning, I rolled up a rug I was replacing, and almost shoved it into storage in our basement. “Just in case,” I thought, catching myself. Why, though?
An overstuffed basement represents postponed decisions. Eventually things start to feel too heavy, bogged down by the weight of indecision, and so they stay stuck.
It’s wise to admit we lack the mental or emotional capacity to make decisions at a given time.
It’s also wise to think of our future selves, and perhaps to ask for help.
When we see a therapist, we are hiring someone to listen to us talk about all the stories we have about our relationships and the trauma leftover from our childhoods.
But we also have stories about our stuff. The Peloton we swear we’ll use. The inherited box we aren’t ready to process. The rug we keep “just in case.”
Therapists help us find a way through the muck of our thoughts. Organizers help find a way out of the clutter.
We both sit beside people as they decide.
If it feels supportive, I offer my clients a hug on my way out.
The same as I’d offer you, dear reader.
If you’re looking for a way out of the mess, try my guided workbook or the full home detox.
Offering my love and support,
